TitusOneNine has posted a Living Church report that Bishop Gene Robinson has authorized only "blessings of civil marriages," but not marriage ceremonies.
Spiritually and theologically, there is no difference. Clergy are blessing that which is not an expression of the Biblical vision and standard of marriage.
But, the Bishop is not altering the Book of Common Prayer, as was incorrectly reported yesterday. For the moment, the official marriage rite of the Episcopal Church holds marriage to be a lifelong union of one man, one woman. All bets are off after the denomination's General Convention does its thing in July.
