Success with an array of such services let Avera Heart qualify late this year as one of the nation's top 50 cardiovascular hospitals. The ranking comes from Thomson Reuters, a Michigan agency that used Medicare data to compare prices, outcomes and satisfaction in an independent analysis of more than 1,000 medical centers.
"They deliver higher survival rates, shorter hospital stays, fewer readmissions and lower costs," Jean Chenoweth, a senior vice president for Thomson Reuters in Ann Arbor, said of the top 50.
In one comparison, Thomson Reuters said a coronary artery bypass would cost $30,235 at Avera Heart, compared with $32,350 for other winners in the community category and $34,277 for all heart programs nationally.
